NBA’s Malik Beasley Faces $2.25 Million Lawsuit from Sports Agency Amid Federal Gambling Probe Over Alleged Unpaid Loans

Malik Beasley, a free agent NBA guard currently under federal investigation for gambling, is also facing a lawsuit from the sports agency he hired, Hazan Sports Management Group, over allegations of breach of contract. According to the lawsuit obtained by Live Michigan and ESPN, Beasley failed to repay a $650,000 cash advance to Hazan Sports, which is now seeking $2.25 million in damages plus legal fees. Hazan Sports claims that since ending its contract with Beasley on February 27th, he has not fulfilled repayment promises and has made vague or sporadic payments. The agency stated that it invested significant time and resources into Beasley, knowing about his financial issues.

The lawsuit was filed in April, around the same time that reports emerged about a federal gambling investigation involving Beasley. ESPN revealed on June 29 that at least one major U.S. sportsbook flagged unusual betting patterns related to Beasley’s performance since January 2024. This gambling probe halted negotiations of a potential three-year, $42 million contract with the Detroit Pistons, following his last season on a one-year, $6 million deal. Beasley’s legal counsel, Steve Haney, emphasized that Beasley has not been charged with any crimes and is presumed innocent.

The NBA confirmed it is cooperating with federal prosecutors on the investigation. Additionally, the lawsuit accuses Beasley of breaching exclusivity by hiring a new marketing agent 15 months after signing with Hazan Sports in November 2023. Over his nine-season NBA career, Beasley has earned $59.5 million. Notably, Beasley is not the first NBA player investigated for gambling-related issues, as former Toronto Raptors reserve John Tayporter was banned for life in 2024 for betting violations and leaking confidential information.
