Adams Squashes Rumors Surrounding Byrum’s Offer Sheet Move

The Buffalo Sabres made minimal moves on the first day of free agency on Tuesday. Their most notable signings were a two-year contract with goaltender Alex Lyon and a long-term extension with center Ryan McLeod. The headline news came from TSN’s Darren Dreger, who reported that several teams are considering an offer sheet for restricted free agent Bowen Byram.

Sabres GM Kevin Adams spoke with the media on the third day of the team’s development camp at Recom Harbor Center on Wednesday. He expressed openness to re-signing the 23-year-old defenseman, who is still two years away from unrestricted free agency, whether through short- or long-term deals, and hinted at bringing in new hockey talent.

Adams explained, “The moves we made and the cap space we maintained were strategic. Leaving room under the salary cap is important because if someone’s salary skyrockets after a year, it could put the organization in a difficult spot. So, the decisions leading up to this point were carefully planned.”

Dreger also revealed that trade discussions involving Byram took place with the Calgary Flames, Vegas Golden Knights, Los Angeles Kings, and St. Louis Blues. Byram tallied 38 points last season. Following the trade of defenseman Kandre Miller to Carolina, and with unrestricted free agents Vladislav Gavrikov and Ivan Provolov signing elsewhere (Provolov inked a seven-year deal with the New York Rangers; others joined the Columbus Blue Jackets), the Sabres are clearly shaping their roster.

Adams said, “I believe Beau is a great player who can contribute to team success.”

Fan Take: The Sabres’ cautious yet strategic approach to free agency highlights their focus on long-term stability rather than quick fixes. For hockey fans, Bowen Byram’s potential offer sheet battle could set an exciting precedent about how teams value young talent and manage salary caps moving forward.
