Aaron Ramsey, the former midfielder for Arsenal, Juventus, and Cardiff City, is set to continue his football journey in Mexico.
The 34-year-old officially signed with Pumas on Thursday, as announced by Liga MX.
Having obtained a work visa for La Liga MX, Ramsey arrived in Mexico City on Tuesday for a medical examination prior to finalizing his contract with the prominent club Pumas.
“I’m thrilled to become a part of this historic team, and I’m eager to hit the pitch,” Ramsey expressed at the Mexico City airport.
Pumas have not clinched a title since the 2011 Clausura tournament but remain one of Mexico’s most beloved clubs.
“I’ve caught a few Liga MX matches and have been really impressed. The competition here has some excellent teams. I’m excited to be a part of it,” Ramsey added.
This move follows a report from June indicating that high-level discussions were underway between Pumas and Ramsey.
The club’s manager, Efryan Juarez, who shares an agency representation with two players from Arsenal, was instrumental in bringing Ramsey to Mexico City.
Last season, Ramsey faced relegation to League One after interim management at his hometown club, Cardiff City. The seasoned midfielder has made 86 appearances for Wales, contributing to their journey to the Euro 2016 semi-finals.
In April, Ramsey mentioned that “the World Cup looms with significant opportunities,” as he now aims to maintain his fitness for the 2026 tournament co-hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico.
Even though Pumas is one of the established “Big Four” in Liga MX, they have been struggling recently, finishing 10th in the 2025 Clausura and exiting in the playoff play-in round.
Since 1996, Liga MX has held two tournaments each year: the Clausura, which starts in January and concludes in May, and the upcoming Apertura, kicking off on July 11th and running through December.
Pumas is also set to compete in The Leagues Cup starting in July, a tournament with teams from both La Liga MX and MLS, where Ramsey will face Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami CF on August 6th.

Fan Take: This transfer marks an exciting chapter for both Aaron Ramsey and Liga MX fans, as a player of his caliber joining the league brings heightened visibility and competitive quality. Moreover, Ramsey’s experience could inspire younger talents in Mexico and elevate the overall level of play in the tournament.
