Donnie Nelson Drops a Tell-All on Nico Harrison’s Exit Drama with Luka Doncic at the Mavericks

Donnie Nelson initially served as assistant coach before becoming the Dallas Mavericks’ general manager in 2005, a role he held until 2021. His successor, Nico Harrison, is known for trading Luka Doncic. Nelson, a Mavericks legend, was the mastermind behind their 2011 championship and key moves such as the 2018 draft trade that brought Doncic to Dallas.

In 2021, Nelson parted ways with the Mavericks, and Harrison took charge, quickly gaining favor by making strategic decisions including signing Kyrie Irving. Since then, the Mavericks have reached two Western Conference Finals and an NBA Final. However, Harrison’s controversial Luka Doncic trade remains a point of contention, prompting Nelson to publicly address the decision.

Nelson was highly respected by players and staff alike for his respectful treatment and dedication to the team’s competitiveness. He built the team around Dirk Nowitzki, especially during Nowitzki’s prime and final years, and was enthusiastic about drafting Doncic, which even kept Nowitzki involved through the 2018-19 season.

Nelson emphasized the importance of treating players with respect, especially those significant to the community, expressing disappointment over what happened with Luka’s trade. The move understandably upset many in Dallas, but the Mavericks still found some silver lining, including winning the NBA Draft Lottery.

Harrison envisions a team built around key players like Cooper Flag, Anthony Davis, and Kyrie Irving, prioritizing defense as a path to championships—a rationale behind trading Doncic, given his defensive liabilities. Despite a promising outlook, fans continue to hold resentment toward Harrison for trading a beloved star, casting a long shadow over the Mavericks’ future moves.
