Teofimo Lopez vs. Devin Haney Fight Canceled: Lopez’s Manager Cites “Personal Reasons”

The highly anticipated fight between Devin Haney and Teofimo Lopez has been canceled just before it could be finalized. Lopez’s manager announced on Thursday that Lopez will not be fighting this summer, despite earlier reports indicating that both fighters had signed for a bout scheduled on August 16th in Saudi Arabia. Initially, the fight was set for a 145-pound catchweight, as reported by boxing journalist Lance Pagma. However, Lopez’s co-manager Keith Connolly revealed that personal matters are preventing Lopez from competing at this time.

Connolly explained, “Unfortunately, Theo will not fight in August due to personal reasons. We had planned the fight, but he needs to ensure he is fully prepared both mentally and physically.”

It remains uncertain if Haney will wait for Lopez to resolve his issues or if he will pursue other opponents. Earlier, a much-discussed rematch between Haney and Ryan Garcia was expected in May, when all three fighters were scheduled on the same card. However, Ryan Garcia’s recent loss to Roland Romero and Haney’s unimpressive decision win over Jose Ramirez shifted his focus toward a more compelling clash with Lopez.

Devin Haney, who holds a 32-0 record with one no contest, remains technically undefeated after a majority decision loss to Garcia was overturned. His victory over Ramirez was an important step in reaffirming his status. Teofimo Lopez, with a 22-1 record, has shown impressive form recently, defending his WBO and “The Ring” junior welterweight titles against Arnold Barboza Jr.

Fan Take: This setback is a disappointment for fight fans eager to see two top talents collide, but it highlights the unpredictable nature of boxing. If Haney and Lopez eventually face off, it could be a defining moment for the junior welterweight division, potentially shaking up the landscape and bringing fresh excitement to the sport.
