Jaxson Hayes and the Lakers Team Up to Secure “Get Out” Victory, Sparking Regret Over Trading Smart to the Houston Rockets

The LA Lakers are actively finalizing agreed deals with several free agents. They have officially signed Jake Laravia and DeAndre Ayton. Following that, the Lakers moved to re-sign Jackson Hayes, aiming to strengthen their center position by adding depth behind Ayton. Despite coach JJ Redick’s earlier reluctance to utilize Hayes during crucial playoff moments, the coaching staff believes in his potential and development.

When re-signing Hayes, he was reportedly given a “no-trade clause,” which is typically granted automatically to players who sign a one-year contract for the third straight year under the latest Collective Bargaining Agreement. However, Hayes has agreed to waive this clause, allowing the Lakers the flexibility to trade him if needed. This waiver was confirmed by reporter Dan Woike.

In another significant update, the Lakers are feeling the impact of losing Dorian Finney-Smith to free agency. Finney-Smith declined the Lakers’ $15 million player option and signed a four-year, $53 million deal with the Houston Rockets. However, reports indicate that only two years of his Rockets contract are guaranteed, meaning Houston can part ways with him by 2027. This contract setup suggests the Rockets’ deal is not exceedingly lavish and that the Lakers might have matched or come close to such terms if they had pursued him more aggressively.

Fan Take: This news is crucial for basketball enthusiasts as it highlights the Lakers’ strategic moves to balance roster flexibility with talent retention. The Hayes situation reflects a focus on development and adaptability, while the Finney-Smith contract underscores the importance of savvy negotiations and roster management in today’s NBA.
