Max Verstappen and Laurent Mekies Speak Out Following Christian Horner’s Bag Controversy

Max Verstappen and Laurent Mekies have issued their first comments following Christian Horner’s removal from Red Bull. Horner stepped down Wednesday morning after the British Grand Prix, ending his remarkable tenure with the team.

This change adds more uncertainty regarding Verstappen’s future with Red Bull. Mekies, who previously led Red Bull’s sister team Racing Bulls, has been appointed as Horner’s successor.

Verstappen shared his initial reaction on social media, recalling their journey from his first race win to four world championships together. He expressed gratitude: “Thank you for everything, Christian!” Overseeing all of Verstappen’s F1 titles, Horner was a key figure in their rise to the top, starting with the controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix victory over Lewis Hamilton.

While Verstappen and Red Bull once dominated the sport, this season has seen a drop in their competitiveness, with Verstappen currently trailing behind drivers like Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. His contract includes exit clauses that might allow him to leave, a situation Mercedes is closely watching as they aim to have the best car in 2026.

With Horner’s departure, Red Bull enters a new chapter that may influence Verstappen’s decisions moving forward.

Laurent Mekies has expressed enthusiasm about leading Red Bull in this new role, stating: “We are excited to take on the responsibility of CEO and Team Principal of Oracle Red Bull Racing, one of the most successful and dynamic teams in the sport. It is an honor to be part of this incredible group of people embodying the spirit of Red Bull.” He acknowledged the strong foundation built by Horner during his 20 years with the team.

Mekies, familiar with driver transitions within Red Bull, having managed changes involving Yuki Tsunoda and Liam Lawson this season, will now face the challenge of filling Horner’s big shoes. Horner leaves behind two golden eras, first with Sebastian Vettel and then with Verstappen, and was the longest-serving team principal in F1 until his exit.

Fan Take: This leadership shakeup at Red Bull is a pivotal moment for the sport, as it could reshape team dynamics and driver futures, including Verstappen’s. Racing fans should watch closely because how Mekies handles this role might define the next era of F1 competition and rivalries.
