Former UFC athlete Ben Askren shared a heartfelt video from his hospital bed following a double lung transplant. Earlier this year, Askren suffered from a severe pneumonia infection that led to his critical condition. His wife, Amy, has been providing daily updates on his health and recovery journey.

Askren, known for winning world titles with One Championship and Bellator, received support from the combat sports community worldwide, including messages from former opponents Jake Paul and Jorge Masvidal. His close friend and teammate Corey Anderson also paid an emotional tribute recently.

For the first time since his serious health challenges began, Askren spoke directly from his hospital bed to update fans on his progress. On Instagram, he revealed he has no memory of the period between May 28 and July 2 and described reading his wife’s journal to understand what occurred. He expressed deep gratitude for the overwhelming love and support from the wrestling and fighting communities, which inspired him to keep fighting and helping others.

His social media posts drew numerous messages of encouragement from friends, family, and fellow fighters, including Daniel Cormier, Chuck Norris, Joe Rogan, and former UFC champion Carla Esparza. Askren underwent the lung transplant on June 30, with Amy updating followers on his status. The UFC honored Askren with a highlight reel during their Atlanta event last month.

A celebrated figure in MMA, Askren was a four-time NCAA Division I wrestling champion before transitioning to MMA, where he earned multiple world titles. Since retiring from active competition, he has focused on coaching wrestling in Wisconsin and co-hosting a podcast with UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier. Although his UFC record was 1-2, he made a significant impact in the sport.

In support of his recovery, fundraising efforts are underway, including sales of special t-shirts with proceeds dedicated to Askren’s medical expenses.

Fan Take: This update is significant for fight fans because it highlights not only the physical risks athletes endure but also the incredible resilience and community support within combat sports. Askren’s journey could inspire greater awareness around fighter health and wellness, reminding fans that behind every warrior is a human story of courage and recovery.
