UFC Champion Jon Jones Hit with New Criminal Charges Following February Car Crash, Report Reveals

John Jones, the recently retired UFC fighter, has been hit with new criminal charges related to a car accident that occurred in February. On June 30, a second lawsuit was filed against Jones in New Mexico, accusing him not only of leaving the scene of the accident but also of using his phone to intimidate, harass, and threaten others. The initial police report states that two vehicles were involved in the crash on February 21. The passenger, a woman, was found in a disheveled state and alleged that Jones was the driver who fled on foot. She also claimed Jones appeared highly intoxicated and made threatening statements implying potential violence through third parties.

An officer at the scene later engaged with Jones, who reportedly responded with vague and dubious language when questioned. Police reviewed Jones’ call records and found multiple calls made to the woman involved in the accident early that morning. Jones faces misdemeanor charges for leaving the accident scene and denied the allegations in a bench trial scheduled for August 14. Another complaint is due on August 4, but Jones’ lawyer has filed a motion to dismiss it, arguing that the charges are duplicates and violate legal rules by forcing Jones to defend against the same facts in two separate cases.

Jones officially retired from mixed martial arts in June, relinquishing the UFC Heavyweight Championship and halting plans to unify the title with interim champion Tom Aspinall. This retirement announcement came before the news about the accident surfaced. Despite retirement, Jones hinted at a possible return, inspired by a proposed UFC event at the White House next year suggested by former President Donald Trump.

Fan Take: This situation is significant for fight fans because John Jones is an iconic figure in MMA, and legal troubles like these can tarnish the sport’s reputation. It also raises questions about athlete conduct outside the octagon and how organizations like the UFC handle such controversies moving forward.
