We highlight two remarkable 21-year-olds, Matyas Sapovaliv and Abram Wiebe, as we wrap up coverage of the Vegas Golden Knights Development Camp.

Both players were selected by the Golden Knights in the 2022 draft—Sapovaliv in the second round (48th overall) and Wiebe in the seventh round (209th overall).

Sapovaliv, a Czech center, is recognized for his composure and precision in the offensive zone. A natural playmaker, he excels by controlling the pace of the game, using his keen vision and puck handling to create scoring opportunities. His skillful playmaking was on full display during his standout season with the OHL’s Saginaw Spirit, where he tallied 62 points (19 goals, 43 assists) in just 54 games during the 2023-24 season. He then transitioned to the AHL with the Henderson Silver Knights, appearing in 71 games from 2024-25 and scoring 19 points (11 goals, 8 assists). Sapovaliv’s ability to maneuver through traffic and deliver precise passes makes him a persistent threat and a valuable player in aggressive offensive strategies.

Reflecting on his first professional season, Sapovaliv said, “It’s professional hockey, and it was particularly tough starting. I had good teammates and great coaching staff. I got better all season and finished hard.”

Turning to Wiebe, he follows a slightly different path, playing defense at the University of North Dakota at the Division 1 college level. During his freshman season in 2023-24, he participated in all 40 games, earning 10 points (1 goal, 9 assists) and finishing second on the team with a +14 rating. He was also honored by being named to the NCHC’s All Academic Team and receiving recognition as an outstanding academic athlete. In the 2024-25 season, Wiebe improved his stats, recording 24 points (4 goals, 20 assists) over 38 games.

Wiebe shared his thoughts, saying, “I’m very grateful for the opportunity to play for North Dakota. It’s a great university, a great coach, and a great hockey team, so I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to play there. Last year, when I went from freshman to sophomore year, I felt a lot more confidence heading into my second year.”

Both young athletes are experiencing exciting seasons, and their recent performances at the development camp offer fans a promising glimpse of what they could bring to the future of the Golden Knights organization.

Fan Take: These rising stars exemplify the blend of skill and dedication vital for the future of hockey. Their development signals an exciting era for the Vegas Golden Knights and offers fans hope for impactful and thrilling hockey in the years ahead.
