Three Must-Target Players for the LA Lakers Amid Austin Reeves Trade Rumors, Featuring 2025 NBA Finals Contenders

The Los Angeles Lakers’ current roster is not optimized to fully utilize the talents of Luka Doncic and LeBron James. Both Doncic and James are not only exceptional scorers but also excellent playmakers, ideally needing to be paired on the court with a strong 3-point shooter and solid defenders in the perimeter and post areas. However, the team lacks sufficient depth and quality in these key roles, leaving general manager Rob Pelinka with significant work to do this offseason. Compounding the challenge, the Lakers have limited trade assets and cap space for improvements. Among the few valuable assets besides Doncic and James, shooting guard Austin Reaves stands out as a fan favorite in Los Angeles, but it may be necessary for him to be traded this summer.

NBA Analysis explores three potential players the Lakers could target in return for trading Reaves, with mock deals proposed for each:

1. The Lakers could acquire Walker Kessler and KJ Martin from the Utah Jazz in exchange for Austin Reaves. Kessler, a promising big man, would instantly boost the Lakers’ defense and offer a strong rim presence. The Jazz, having recently traded Colin Sexton for veteran center Jusuf Nurkic, now need more backcourt scoring and playmaking, which Reaves could provide.

2. Another option is trading for Myles Turner and Ben Sheppard from the Indiana Pacers, offering Austin Reaves and Maxi Kleber in return. Turner has been rumored to leave the Pacers for some time and could be acquired this offseason. After Tyrese Halliburton’s Achilles injury, the Pacers will be looking to fill the gap in their offense, making Reaves a valuable asset.

3. The Lakers might also consider a deal with the Brooklyn Nets, acquiring Nick Claxton and Cameron Johnson while sending Austin Reaves, Jarred Vanderbilt, Maxi Kleber, Gabe Vincent, and a 2031 first-round pick to Brooklyn. Claxton brings the size, strength, shot-blocking, and alley-oop threat needed at center, while 3-and-D specialist Cameron Johnson fits well alongside James and Claxton in the frontcourt. The Reaves and Cam Thomas backcourt duo would energize the Nets in the upcoming season, and the additional players would help clear cap space for Brooklyn’s future free agency moves.

Fan Take: This potential shake-up in Los Angeles highlights a crucial phase for the Lakers as they strive to build a championship-contending team around their superstar duo. For basketball fans, these proposed trades signal exciting strategic moves that could reshape the league’s balance of power and ignite new rivalries.
