Ex-Penguin Ryan Finds New Home in Exciting Trade Deal

Former Pittsburgh Penguins forward Ryan Reeves is on the move. The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced a trade sending Reeves to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for defenseman Henry Srun.

Reeves, who struggled to maintain a spot on the Maple Leafs’ depth chart this season and spent significant time with their AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies, is now expected to bring added physicality to San Jose’s bottom-six forwards as the team continues its rebuild. Last season, Reeves appeared in 35 games for Toronto, recording two assists, 28 penalty minutes, 103 hits, and a minus-2 rating. He also scored in three games against the Marlies.

During the 2017-18 season, Reeves started with the Penguins before being traded to the Vegas Golden Knights at the deadline. In his 58 games with Pittsburgh, he tallied four goals, eight points, 84 penalty minutes, and 161 hits. Across his 912-game NHL career, Reeves has accumulated 63 goals, 137 points, 1,100 penalty minutes, and 3,065 hits, representing several teams including the St. Louis Blues, Penguins, Golden Knights, New York Rangers, Minnesota Wild, and Maple Leafs.

In other roster moves, the Pittsburgh Penguins acquired defenseman Matt Dumba from the Dallas Stars, adding him to their blue line in exchange for Vladislav Korikonok and a 2028 second-round draft pick.

Fan Take: This trade marks a strategic shift for both teams—San Jose gains a gritty presence in Reeves to strengthen their forward depth, while Toronto bolsters its defense with Srun. Moves like these highlight the ever-changing nature of NHL rosters and the ongoing pursuit of balance between skill and physicality in hockey.
