Crystal Palace has been relegated to the conference league due to breaches of multiclub ownership regulations, as determined by a UEFA panel. Nottingham Forest will have the opportunity to secure a place in the Europa League for the next season by winning the FA Cup. However, Crystal Palace is expected to contest the decision made by the Club Financial Control Agency (CFCB). According to UEFA rules, clubs participating in the same competition cannot have common ownership exceeding specified limits.

Eagle Football, owned by American entrepreneur John Text, is the major shareholder of Crystal Palace and also owns Lyon. Recently, Lyon managed to successfully challenge their relegation from League One, ensuring their participation in the Europa League based on their league finish and leading to a decision concerning UEFA’s CFCB. If Lyon were to be relegated, they had agreed to withdraw from the European competition.

Crystal Palace maintains that the ownership structure does not significantly impact their operations, but UEFA disagreed. Text is in negotiations to sell shares to Woody Johnson, owner of the New York Jets, although the Premier League has yet to approve this transaction. Additionally, the club failed to meet the March 1 deadline to submit relevant evidence regarding their multiclub ownership restructuring.

As of March 1, Oliver Glasner’s squad was positioned 12th in the Premier League after defeating Millwall 3-1 and advancing to the fifth round of the FA Cup. For the club to secure its first major trophy in history, it must first overcome stiff competition from Aston Villa and Manchester City at Wembley Stadium.

Nottingham Forest will reclaim the Europa League position, a result of their Premier League standing affording them a chance in the Conference League this season.

Fan Take:

This development could reshape the landscape of soccer by reinforcing UEFA’s strict regulations on club ownership, ensuring a more level playing field in European competitions. For fans, this means a heightened focus on supporting fair gameplay, as breaches in regulations could diminish the integrity of beloved tournaments like the Europa League.
