What’s the Largest Red Wing Yet to Be Found?

The Detroit Red Wings have made several additions to their roster as they prepare for the 2025-26 NHL season, but it’s uncertain if GM Steve Yzerman will still be part of the team moving forward. Detroit has bolstered their lineup by signing depth players on both offense and defense, including James Van Riemsdyk, Mason Appleton, John Leonard, Ian Mitchell, and Jacob Bernard-Docker. They also strengthened their goaltending by acquiring John Gibson from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Petr Mrazek, making their netminder situation more stable than last offseason.

However, the Red Wings still face urgent needs at both forward and defense positions. Yzerman remains at the top of their wishlist, along with a genuine offensive threat suitable for Detroit’s top six, and a reliable top-four defenseman. Since most impactful free agents are already signed or traded, addressing these gaps may require exploring trade opportunities.

Yzerman admitted he hasn’t had much chance to negotiate with top free agents, as many were re-signed or moved by their teams before the Red Wings could engage. Notable players like Florida Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad, who showed interest in Detroit, ended up re-signing with their original teams. Similarly, other key players such as Sam Bennett, Brad Marchand, Ivan Provorov, Nicolaj Ehlers, Mason Marchment, Noah Dobson, Vladislav Gavrikov, and K’Andre Miller have found new or extended contracts elsewhere.

Despite this, Detroit still has roughly $12 million in cap space, allowing them to pursue impactful player trades to end their postseason drought. Potential targets include forwards Jason Robertson, Brian Rust, and Kyle Connor, as well as defensemen Rasmus Andersson and Erik Karlsson.

With training camp over two months in, Yzerman has left the door open to trade possibilities, noting that some teams might want to move players due to cap constraints or roster needs. He acknowledged that while some teams face cap challenges, many still have significant cap room to work with.

Fan Take: This news is crucial for hockey fans because it highlights Detroit’s strategic efforts to reshape their team and compete more effectively. If Yzerman’s trade pursuits succeed, the Red Wings could break their postseason drought and reinvigorate the NHL with fresh competition.
