Vikings’ Dara Sterner Falls Victim to $240,000 Bank Fraud Scheme

Dara Sterner, linebacker for the Minnesota Vikings, has reportedly fallen victim to a bank fraud scheme resulting in a loss of $240,000. Egan Police Sergeant Rich Evans shared with ESPN that several suspects have been identified, and authorities are working to bring criminal charges against them. So far, about $2,500 has been recovered, and the investigation is ongoing.

Turner and his lawyers reported the fraud to the Egan Police Department in April, as outlined in a search warrant affidavit recently filed in Dakota County District Court. The affidavit details an incident on February 19, when someone impersonated Turner at a JPMorgan Chase branch in Arizona, using counterfeit IDs to initiate wire transfers. The fraudster instructed Turner to transfer funds to two different businesses to avoid detection, leading Turner to send $120,000 each to “Island Food Truck LLC” and “CNL FL LLC.”

After discussing the situation with his family, Turner, 22, suspected he had been defrauded, according to the affidavit. The Egan Police Department requested details from JPMorgan Chase regarding the bank’s investigation and whether any employees might have been involved. Turner, a first-round pick for the Vikings in the 2024 draft from Alabama, played 16 games in his rookie season, recording three sacks and interceptions.

Fan Take: This incident highlights the vulnerability even high-profile athletes face off the field, reminding fans that players can be targets beyond just the game. It also raises concerns about security measures in sports organizations, signaling a need for better protection of players’ financial and personal information.
