Adrian Peterson, the former NFL star, is making headlines again, but this time for stepping into the celebrity boxing ring. TMZ Sports reports that Peterson has inked a deal for a celebrity boxing match, with his first fight scheduled against Joe “Baby Joe” Castaneda in May at the Joker Stars venue in Houston. Peterson revealed to TMZ that despite a previous altercation with Castaneda during a poker game this summer, their relationship remains friendly, describing it as a brotherly dispute that resulted in a scuffle but no legal consequences. Although videos showed Peterson with a bloody face, he explained the injury was from hitting a chair during the tussle.

At 40 years old, Peterson, who previously lost a boxing match by knockout in 2022 against former NFL player Le’Veon Bell, faces financial and legal challenges. In September 2024, a judge mandated that Peterson sell off assets to settle debts totaling $12.5 million. Earlier, he was arrested for a DWI after leaving a party hosted by the Minnesota Vikings following the April NFL Draft. The upcoming boxing match could provide financial relief for Peterson, who still owes a loan from a Pennsylvania lending company dating back to 2016.

Peterson’s illustrious NFL career began in 2007 when he was named Oklahoma’s NFL Rookie of the Year. Over 15 years, he rushed for 14,918 yards and scored 120 touchdowns, mainly with Minnesota during his first decade, and had shorter stints with New Orleans, Washington, Arizona, Detroit, Tennessee, and Seattle. A four-time first-team All-Pro, Peterson is widely regarded as a future Hall of Famer, highlighted by his MVP season in 2012 when he ran for 2,097 yards, becoming only the seventh player in NFL history to surpass 2,000 yards in a season. He led the league in rushing twice more, in 2008 and 2015.

In 2023, Peterson attempted an NFL comeback but was unsigned. At that point, he was fourth on the all-time rushing list, just 352 yards shy of surpassing Barry Sanders. Toward the end of his career, Peterson expressed confidence that he could one day break Emmitt Smith’s all-time rushing record of 18,355 yards, acknowledging the challenges and injuries he faced but still believing in his potential to achieve this milestone. He spoke highly of Smith, crediting him with inspiring many.

Fan Take: Adrian Peterson’s transition from football to celebrity boxing is a testament to his enduring competitive spirit and resilience. For NFL fans, this development is compelling as it highlights the athletes’ evolving careers post-football and underscores the financial and personal challenges even legendary players face, adding depth to the narrative of life after the NFL.
