Miles Lowe Set to Make History as First Black Indy NXT Champion at Iowa Speedway

At Iowa Speedway, Miles Lowe made history by overtaking current championship leader Dennis Hauger on the final stretch, securing his first Indy NXT win and becoming the series’ first Black winner. Hauger dominated most of the race until Lowe passed him with 14 laps remaining, pulling ahead by more than a second on the oval track.

Lowe shared with Fox Sports the importance of seeing successful role models, especially for young fans where motorsports can seem larger than life. He acknowledged the team’s hard work and strategic patience, particularly navigating traffic and managing tire wear on the flat oval surface.

Before the race, Lowe finished fourth after sessions were canceled on Friday due to an approaching tornado. During the race, he capitalized on Hauger being delayed behind a lapped car to make his move.

Rowe’s experience on oval tracks was vital to his win, focusing on strategy and timing rather than aggressive overtakes. Notably, Rowe was the first Black driver to win an IndyCar-sanctioned race with his USF2000 Series victory in 2021, followed by multiple wins and a championship title in the 2023 USF Pro Series 2000.

After racing for HMD Motorsports in 2024, Lowe switched to Abel Motorsports this season. While proud of his inaugural Indy NXT win, Lowe is hungry for more victories and aims to ascend to the IndyCar series, saying, “We won’t stop here. We’re aiming higher.”

Fan Take: This milestone victory for Miles Lowe is a landmark moment, showcasing diversity and fresh talent in racing. For fans, it signals an exciting shift where underrepresented drivers are breaking barriers, promising a more inclusive and competitive sport ahead.
