Chelsea Crowned World Champions Amidst Aggressive Play

By Doug McIntyre, Football Journalist

East Rutherford, NJ – Chelsea has secured its status as world champions with a brilliant display of playmaking.

Cole Palmer celebrated twice during the first half, leading the British Giants to a 3-0 victory at the FIFA Club World Cup on Sunday. His performance stood out in front of a packed MetLife Stadium of 81,118 fans, including President Donald Trump.

PSG, fresh off their first UEFA Champions League victory against Inter Milan in May, faced setbacks, ending up with a red card as their frustrations boiled over. Tensions flared post-match when PSG’s coach, Luis Enrique, and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma got into a brief altercation with Chelsea’s Joa Pedro.

Ultimately, it was Chelsea’s day, as the team emerged victorious. Here’s how the final unfolded:

Chelsea captain Reece James lifted the FIFA Club World Cup trophy after the win against PSG.

Turning Point

The match kicked off at a frenetic pace, despite the temperature nearing 90 degrees. Palmer initially squandered a good chance, sending a shot wide of PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma.

On the other end, Chelsea’s goalkeeper Robert Sanchez made crucial saves, denying PSG’s Desire Doo Low. However, Palmer quickly redeemed himself, scoring first after receiving a pass from Malogsto, placing the ball in the lower left corner past Donnarumma to put Chelsea ahead early on.

Playing the Game

Palmer’s second goal mirrored his first, demonstrating his prowess. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s Joan Pedro elegantly added a third, calmly handling the ball before slotting it in past Donnarumma.

This marked Palmer’s third goal in three appearances since joining Chelsea on July 2, having previously netted a brace against Fulminence, his boyhood club.

Key Statistics

Chelsea’s triumph secured them their second Club World Cup title, eighteen months after winning the 2021 title in the previous format with only seven teams. Their only other matches during that period included victories over Al-Hilal in the final and Palmeiras.

What’s Next for PSG?

PSG will quickly regroup, facing Tottenham Hotspur, the Europa League champions, in the UEFA Super Cup final in Italy on August 13. Three days later, they will kick off their Ligue 1 title defense against Nantes.

What’s Next for Chelsea?

Chelsea’s next match isn’t until early August when they host preseason friendlies against Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan in their preparations. The team will then open the 2025-26 Premier League season against FA Cup holders Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge on August 17.

This victory for Chelsea is not just about lifting a trophy; it signifies their resurgence as a dominant force in global football. For soccer fans, this win sets the stage for an exciting season ahead, with both clubs poised for intense competitions.
