Wimbledon: Champagne Cork suspends Janik Thinner’s serve during the men’s final victory over Carlos Alcaraz

Only at Wimbledon.

Champagne cork from the stands landed on the court on Sunday, suspending the men’s final between Carlos Alcaraz and Janik Sinner. Seriously.

The disturbance took place in the second set as the sinner was ready to serve. I heard the pop I heard on the broadcast, but it didn’t sound like the ball was hit. But that wasn’t the case.

The sinner retreated from his serve, and Alkaraz raised his hands in the air.

The stool umpire was directed towards the problem fan.

“Don’t pop champagne coke like players are trying to serve,” she said. “thank you.”

That was a reasonable request.

The low laugh from the stands has shifted to booing. The ESPN camera then pointed to the ball girl who was in a hurry to remove foreign objects from the court. The cork landed near the sinner, picked it up and threw it away.

This is not the first time Champagne Pop has suspended action at the All England Club. Ladies finalist Amanda Anishimova attracted fans for Champagne Pop during an early round match.

“Why are you opening it now?” she asked naturally.

In 2021, Champagne Cork advanced to the court during a match between Coco Gauff and Elena Vesnina.

Fortunately, for the sinner, interference in his serves did not affect his play. After dropping the first set, Thinner advanced to a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory, winning his first Wimbledon title and his fourth Grand Slam Championship.
