Glasgow Rangers remain four points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership with four games remaining after Saturday’s defeat at Ibrox.
Gers went from 2-0 down to leveling the score at 2-2 in the second half, before a 90th-minute goal saw them lose 3-2 to Motherwell in front of their own supporters.
Too many players are below the standard needed to compete for the league title and Danny Rolle must be ruthless in his selection of squads going forward.
The Gers face league leaders Hearts in next weekend’s league game, and the Germans are expected to make significant changes to their starting XI for that game.
One player who will have to sit out of the starting XI against Jam Tarts and sit on the bench is Brentford loanee Jayden Meghoma, who started at left-back against Motherwell.
Why Jaden Meghoma shouldn’t start again this season
The England Under-20 international should not start any new games for Gers this season, with Tour Rommens expected to return from injury against Hearts.
In the loss to Motherwell, Meghoma struggled both on and off the ball, finishing the game with no tackles, no shots on target, and no chances for his teammates, and was sent off during the break.
Romens has made further offers to the club since joining from Westerlo for £3m in the January transfer window and should start the remaining four games as long as he is fit.
25/26 Premiership | Megoma | romance |

A big opportunity has arisen | 4 | 4 |
Key paths per game | 0.7 | 2.7 |
Tackles + Interceptions per game | 2.1 | 2.8 |
Number of dribble breakthroughs per game | 0.2x | 0.2x |
Aerial duel success rate | 20% | 71% |
Romens had become more creative and defensively stronger in his short time at Gers, and was the first choice at left-back before his injury.
But Meghoma is not the only Rangers player to be left out of the squad ahead of next weekend’s Premiership clash with Hearts.
Rangers defender should be left out along with Jayden Meghoma
The other Rangers defender struggled in the loss to Motherwell but should be left out of the side as he risks becoming the new John Souter at Ibrox.
Souttar has not featured in four of Gers’ last five league games, having been dropped in the pecking order by Nasser Dziga and Emmanuel Fernandes, and Dujon Sterling could follow him.
The versatile defender was even worse than Meghoma against Motherwell and should have been placed on the bench against Hearts, despite being trusted to start at right-back and move to left-back in the second half.
vs motherwell | Megoma | sterling |
|---|---|---|
minutes | 45 | 77 |
tackle lost | 0 | 3 |
Number of balls collected | 2 | 1 |
dribbled past | 0x | 1x |
inaccurate cross | 2 | 6 |
Pass accuracy | 94% | 90% |
Sterling finished the game without winning a tackle despite attempting three tackles, and although he was dribbled through more often than Megoma, he recovered the ball less often.
The Brentford loanee is also more reliable on the ball, has a higher pass success rate and wastes fewer crossing chances. This suggests that even though both players performed poorly, he was the better player on and off the ball.
Sterling has not featured in two of the last four games for the matchday squad and was not included in the match against Falkirk due to the artificial pitch.
If Rolle benches him as an unused substitute against Hearts, the versatile full-back could end up being used more often as an unused substitute for the rest of the season, similar to Soutard.
The German head coach could choose to take over the leadership and experience of James Tavernier, who is in his final four games as a Rangers player as he looks to lead the club to their first title since the 2020/21 season.
Sterling was unable to stop a cross for Motherwell’s opening goal and was forced out of bounds when he scored their second goal, a disastrous piece of defending by the former Chelsea full-back.
Therefore, Tavernier’s return could mean he will be on the bench for the time being, and he could be on the bench alongside Soutard against Hearts.
