Zurich – England’s head coach Sarina Wiegman expressed that at least three times during the match, she feared the Lionesses’ journey in Euro 2025 was over before they triumphed over Sweden in a penalty shootout.

After trailing by two goals, England rallied to equalize with a 2-2 draw in regulation time, followed by a nail-biting penalty shootout where they won 3-2, largely thanks to a crucial penalty and stellar performances from Hannah Hampton.

Wiegman described her emotions after the “intense” match, stating that she has never experienced a game like that in her coaching career.

Wiegman admitted that watching Sweden take a 2-0 lead in the first half was tough. “We aimed for a much better start than what we had,” she said, noting that once Sweden scored their second goal, it became challenging for her team to find their rhythm. However, after some adjustments, they began to improve, though their performance in the second half wasn’t much stronger.

Wiegman made pivotal changes, bringing in Chloe Kelly at the 78th minute, which led to Lucy Bronze scoring England’s first goal just one minute later, followed by a close-range finish from Michelle Aigman shortly after.

As the match reached penalties, Hampton’s exceptional goalkeeping became evident as she saved two crucial shots, while Bronze stepped up for the final goal. Wiegman remarked, “I thought we were out at least three times during the game.”

Wiegman praised Hampton’s performance, stating, “She was undoubtedly solid for our team.” Her impressive saves and quick reflexes helped turn the game in England’s favor.

Wiegman also lauded Bronze, saying, “Lucy is one of a kind; I have never seen anyone quite like her. She exemplifies resilience and determination.” She emphasized that the only way to remove her from the game would be if she were incapacitated.

Leah Williamson was forced to leave the match due to an ankle injury early in the second half of extra time, leaving England anxious about her fitness ahead of the semi-final clash against Italy on Tuesday. Wiegman mentioned, “We’ll assess her condition tomorrow,” expressing uncertainty regarding Williamson’s status.

Fan Take: This thrilling match underscores the unpredictability of soccer, highlighting the Lionesses’ tenacity and resilience. As England continues its journey in the Euro 2025, fans are reminded of the sport’s exhilarating nature and the potential for unforgettable moments on such a grand stage.
