Rain Washes Out Qualifying, Elliott Secures Pole Position for NASCAR Cup in Dover

On Saturday afternoon at Dover Motor Speedway, there was no rain, but NASCAR decided to cancel the Cup Series practice and qualifying sessions on the challenging concrete track. Alongside the usual uncertainties of race weekends, teams are also dealing with Goodyear tires that haven’t been freshly tested for this event.

Due to the cancellation, the starting lineup was determined by a metric formula that includes 15% fastest lap times from the previous race, 25% driver finishing positions, 25% owner race finishing positions, and 35% owner points standings. After these calculations, Chase Elliott earned the pole position at Dover, sharing the front row with Chase Briscoe of Joe Gibbs Racing. Christopher Bell, Tyler Reddick, and William Byron completed the top five starters.

Shane Van Gisbergen, fresh off his Sonoma victory, qualified sixth but expressed some reservations during a late rain interview, noting his ongoing learning process on oval tracks despite being a road course specialist. Michael McDowell starts seventh, followed by Joey Logano in eighth, Ty Gibbs ninth, and Kyle Busch rounding out the top ten.

Notable drivers starting deeper in the field include Denny Hamlin at 13th, Ross Chastain at 19th, Kyle Larson at 25th, and Ryan Blaney at 31st.

Fan Take: This lineup shake-up highlights the unpredictability and strategic complexity inherent in NASCAR, especially when weather interferes with normal protocols. It’s a reminder for fans that adaptability and resilience are crucial, making each race weekend uniquely thrilling and impactful for the championship battle.
