  • Koby Mainu endures difficult days at Manchester United under manager Ruben Amorim
  • Manchester United’s future is bright

Manchester United midfielder Koby Mainu has admitted it was “difficult” not to play much during Ruben Amorim’s time as manager.

Since Michael Carrick came on as caretaker manager, Mainu has once again become a key player for Man United, with the England international reminding everyone of his quality.

As time went on, it became increasingly puzzling that Amorim seemed determined not to include Mainu, who had attracted interest from Chelsea and other clubs in uncertain circumstances.

Mainoo, who recently signed a new contract at Old Trafford, has been honest about his time in charge and suggested Carrick’s arrival has stopped him from thinking seriously about his future.

Mainu spoke in an interview with Sky Sports about what it was like to suddenly have to be lowered to the bench as Amorim’s tactical system seemed unable to create space for him.

“When you’re not playing a lot of games, or you’re not playing any games, you think about everything,” the 21-year-old said.

“But what was always at the forefront of my mind was to play for Manchester United and continue to play for the club I grew up with.”

Furthermore, he added: “Yes, when a new manager comes in, they have their own way of doing things and if they don’t think you fit in, then you don’t fit in either.

“All I can do is try and train to be able to see it from a different perspective.

“It’s always going to be a difficult adjustment to go from playing almost every game to playing less often. It was good for me in terms of learning about myself, the game, and patience.

“How to schedule your life, how to train, how to work, how to create a routine.

“Obviously it’s difficult not to play even as a sub, but I think my family and friends helped me see the light at the end of the tunnel. They just had to be patient because they knew it was going to change direction at some point.”

Manchester United’s future is bright

Mainu is clearly one of the top young midfielders in Europe at the moment and the future looks bright if United can develop around him.

On top of that, Mainoo has a manager in Carrick who seems to know how to get the best out of him.

The 44-year-old looks set to take up the MUFC job permanently after initially taking charge on an interim basis, so it looks like they will have a successful long-term partnership going forward.
