San Diego Gears Up to Host NASCAR Showdown at Naval Base Coronado in 2026

NASCAR has found a new street course race to replace the Chicago Street Course, which won’t be returning next year. The new event will take place at Naval Base Coronado in San Diego, where all three national NASCAR divisions will compete. While the Chicago race was traditionally held during the July 4 weekend, the San Diego race is scheduled for June 19-21. This event will be NASCAR’s first street race held on an active military base, coinciding with the country’s 250th anniversary celebrations.

Though the exact track layout is yet to be unveiled, NASCAR collaborated with IRECING to develop the street course. The race also honors the naval forces and the men and women who serve, symbolizing values such as grit, teamwork, and patriotism. Navy Secretary John C. Phelan highlighted NASCAR’s embodiment of American spirit and expressed pride in opening the base to the public for this historic race. Captain Loren Jacobi of Navy Base Coronado echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the honor of working with NASCAR as part of the anniversary festivities.

This event also marks the return of the NASCAR Cup Series to Southern California, following the closure of the Auto Club Speedway, which held its final race in 2023.

Fan Take: This new race at Naval Base Coronado is a thrilling development for NASCAR, blending motorsports with patriotic celebration and honoring the military. For fans, it offers a fresh, unique racing experience in a historic and meaningful setting, potentially adding a memorable chapter to the sport’s evolving legacy.
