Atlantic Friends Racing’s horse, Historic Mind, claimed a significant victory by winning the Grade 1, $150,000 AP Smithwick Memorial hurdle race at Saratoga. Despite a long almost two-year break and an initially rough comeback in April at Morven Park, the 8-year-old Fracas Gelding, trained by Keri Brion, showed remarkable resilience to capture his first top-level win in this 2 3/8-mile race for older horses.

Brion expressed deep affection for Historic Mind, acknowledging the owner’s patience through the horse’s challenges and setbacks. Riding on June 4th, Danny Mullins expertly guided Historic Mind, who overcame strong competition and a tightly contested final stretch, especially from the horse Innocent Proven, ultimately securing the win by a comfortable margin.

The race unfolded on a firm grass course with Mullins employing tactical riding to reserve energy for a powerful finish. Historic Mind carried a hefty 158 pounds and managed to keep rivals, including Zarak the Brave and Who’s Counting, behind. This victory marked Mullins’ first Grade 1 win at Saratoga and highlighted the international caliber of jump jockeys competing on this stage.

Trainer Brion credited the owner’s unwavering faith and patience as crucial to Historic Mind’s return to form. Bred by J.S. Bolger in Ireland, Historic Mind notched his sixth win from 24 starts, adding to previous Hurdle Stakes successes in 2021 and 2022.

The Saratoga meet continues with exciting races, including a $135,000 listed event, with extensive live coverage and betting options available for fans nationwide through NYRA BETS.

Fan Take: Historic Mind’s comeback story embodies the grit and enduring spirit that captures the essence of horse racing, inspiring fans and participants alike. This victory not only underscores the importance of patience and dedicated training but also signals exciting prospects for the future of jump racing at premier venues like Saratoga.
