Alisha Gray led the Atlanta Dream with 28 points, while Britney Grey contributed 17 points and eight rebounds against her former team, helping Atlanta secure a 90-79 victory over the Phoenix Mercury on Wednesday night.

Brittney Griner made her return to Phoenix, where she spent 11 seasons with the Mercury, including appearances in the 2014 WNBA Finals and the 2021 championship series. Prior to the game, the Mercury honored Griner with a tribute video, and veteran teammate Diana Taurasi was present courtside.

Gray extended Atlanta’s lead to 84-71, but Phoenix closed the gap to seven points in the final 3:03 by hitting consecutive three-pointers. Griner then scored a key basket, pushing Atlanta’s lead to 86-77.

Jordin Canada added 14 points, and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough scored 11, contributing to Atlanta’s 14-10 record and their second win in five games. Rhyne Howard, who averages 16.5 points per game, did not play. Gray was highly efficient, making 10 of 16 shots in what marked his 10th game scoring over 20 points.

Phoenix welcomed back Satou Sabally and Kahleah Copper to their starting lineup after injury absences since July 3. Sabally scored 13 points, Copper added 10, and Dewanna Bonner led with 18 points. Alyssa Thomas nearly had a triple-double with 7 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 assists.

Gray’s 13 first-half points helped Atlanta build a 39-34 lead. Phoenix struggled offensively, shooting just 29.7% overall and 3 of 15 from beyond the arc, but stayed competitive by making all nine free throws.

Fan Take: This game highlights the competitive nature of the WNBA and the strong storylines, like Griner’s return to Phoenix, that captivate fans. Atlanta’s win signals their rising potential, making the league more exciting and unpredictable for supporters as the season progresses.
