Revving Up: Qualifying Highlights from the 2025 Laguna Seca IndyCar Grand Prix in Monterey

At Laguna Seca, Alex Palou secured pole position with a lap time of 1:08.341, narrowly ahead of his championship contender Pat O’Ward. O’Ward, aiming for his second pole of the season, maintained his strong form but will have to push hard in tomorrow’s race as he trails the leading Spaniards by less than 100 points.

Palou praised his car’s performance, crediting Chip Ganassi Racing for their excellent work and expressed excitement for the upcoming race, acknowledging the challenge of turning qualifying speed into race success in IndyCar. Though O’Ward would have preferred pole, he accepted this as his best qualifying result at Laguna Seca and recognized Palou as the main rival to beat.

Colton Herta took third place, with multiple-time champion Josef Newgarden finishing fourth, alongside teammate Will Power in fifth. David Marcus ended the final qualifying session at the back of the top group. Early morning fog canceled two practice sessions, leaving drivers with limited setup time before qualifying.

In Group 1, strategy diverged on tire choice, with Penske drivers Newgarden and Scott McLaughlin opting for softer tires, alongside Marcus Ericsson. Others preferred harder compounds, favoring tire durability. McLaughlin voiced frustration over the missed practice but remained optimistic about improvements. McLaughlin qualified 13th, Ericsson 15th.

Despite some soft tire users being eliminated early, Group 2 featured seven drivers on red soft tires. Ultimately, all drivers switched to soft tires for the final runs. Pato O’Ward narrowly avoided elimination and clinched the top spot on the timesheet in the last moments. Kyle Kirkwood also barely avoided elimination, finishing ninth, noting areas to improve for the race.

Santino Ferrucci and Nolan Siegel were among those eliminated, while Graham Rahal scraped into the fast 12. Ferrucci qualified 20th, and Rahal 18th. The Fast 12 round saw mixed tire strategies again, with Colton Herta making the session competitive by setting the fastest lap on used soft tires.

O’Ward was nearly eliminated during the round but secured a spot in the final six, helped by Felix Rosenqvist’s spin, which ended Rosenqvist’s weekend early, leaving him 12th on the grid. Rosenqvist accepted responsibility and looked to move forward in the race.

In the final session, drivers held back their best laps until the closing minutes. Newgarden and Palou started on hard tires and switched later to softs. Herta waited in the session, opting not to set an early lap. O’Ward was the first to strike and set the pace.

Final qualifying results saw Palou on pole, followed by O’Ward and Herta, with Newgarden and Power completing the top five.
