Over the years, Manchester United fans have often worried about changes to key players, and it looks like that will be the case this summer.

Experienced central midfielder Casemiro announced a few months ago that he would leave Old Trafford when his current contract expires this summer.

The Brazilian has revived his Premier League career in recent months and has since appeared in all but two league games to date.

He has also registered a combined contribution of 10 goals during this period, which currently places him third in the senior ranks in this category, with only Bruno Fernandes and Brian Mbeumo scoring more goals.

However, the division now has a huge task to replace the 33-year-old this window, and efforts to strengthen the midfield department are now firmly underway.

Manchester United eyeing £40m deal for Premier League star

In recent weeks, Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali has emerged as one of the Red Devils’ main targets to replace Casemiro, who leaves this summer.

The Italy international has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford, but a move in this window would likely be costly for INEOS and United.

The deal is reported to require a transfer fee of around £80 million, making it one of the most expensive deals in the club’s 148-year history.

But Tonali is not the only Premier League option they currently have in mind, with Bournemouth star Tyler Adams also currently under consideration.

Organist Ben Jacobs said the U.S. player is just one name on a shortlist and could make an offer if a spot opens up.

He also said it was not the first time the Red Devils wanted to sign the 27-year-old, after negotiations took place with his agent in January.

It is unclear whether the Cherries will allow a move this summer, but it has been previously mooted that the midfielder’s deal would cost close to £40m.

Why Adams is a better signing for United than Tonali

As mentioned above, Tonali remains one of United’s main transfer targets this season, with the Newcastle star likely to leave when the window opens.

The Magpies have relied heavily on success in the Premier League to cover their heavy spending, but Eddie Howe’s side have fallen well short of expectations this term.

His side sit 14th in England’s top flight and there is a slim chance the club will secure European football next season, but failure to do so could pave the way for the departure of key personnel.

The Italian will undoubtedly be seen as one of their biggest assets, especially considering interest from the likes of United, but also Arsenal and Manchester City.

However, despite the possibility of signing the 25-year-old, the Red Devils should aim to sign Adams instead during the summer transfer window.

The Bournemouth star comes in for half the fee the Italian would pay, but has managed to put up some notable performances, many of them better than the Newcastle star.

Comparing the basic numbers from the ongoing campaign, it’s clear that Adams is better without the ball, and United will need that when Casemiro leaves.

The Cherries sensation has contributed an impressive 11.6 defenses per 90 points so far this season, while also averaging 2.6 tackles in every game he has played.

Both of the aforementioned numbers are higher than those produced by the Magpies star, while also ranking him within the top 20% of midfielders in his division.

Adams also has a good interception rate, at 1.8 per 90, which, like his tackles, is better than Tonali’s.

With the ball at his feet, the Cherries star has dominated Newcastle’s ace, as evidenced by his 87% pass success rate and 46% dribbling success rate.

Adding all the statistics in and out of possession, it’s clear that Adams is a player who has definitely been underrated over the past few months, with pundit Ian Wright previously suggesting that the midfielder gives Adams a “(N’Golo) Kante vibe”.

He is certainly a player who can make a difference in Casemiro’s absence, and with a rumored £40m price tag, the Red Devils could secure a bargain.

Tonali would also be a great addition given his experience at the top level, but ultimately the price difference should favor the American in terms of class.
