Brett Berard has faced numerous challenges during his rookie season with the New York Rangers, a journey that has flown largely under the radar. Throughout 35 NHL games this past season, Berard displayed glimpses of his potential, with no outward signs of serious injury. However, he revealed that he had been playing with torn lips since his fourth NHL game and continued to compete despite the pain.

The 22-year-old forward seized his opportunity in the big leagues and chose not to let a torn lip hold him back. “I was out for about a week or so, but that’s part of being in the NHL,” Berard said. “You’ve trained your whole life for this. I also felt like I was playing pretty well, so I really didn’t want to lose my spot.”

Berard was initially set to represent Team USA at the 2025 IIHF World Championships in May but had to pull out due to injury. Over the summer, he focused on rehabilitation and is expected to be fully ready for training camp in December. Alongside his recovery, Berard trains at Prentiss Hockey Performance with NHL players like Chris Cryder, Matt Rempe, and Jonathan Quick.

Fan Take: Berard’s resilience and determination highlight the fierce competitive spirit required to succeed in the NHL. His journey is inspiring for hockey fans, as it underscores the dedication and toughness that can shape the future stars of the sport.
