Manchester City has officially brought back goalkeeper James Trafford from Burnley, the club announced on Tuesday.

Reports indicate that the transfer amounted to £27 million ($36.3 million), with Trafford signing a five-year contract that includes an option for a further year.

City outmaneuvered Newcastle United to secure the 22-year-old player, who previously left Manchester for Burnley just two years ago.

During his time at Burnley, Trafford made 78 appearances, recording an impressive 29 clean sheets during their promotion campaign last season.

The England Youth International will don City’s first-team jersey, marking him as the club’s sixth signing of the summer.

“Returning to City is a special and proud moment for my family and me,” Trafford expressed. “I’ve always dreamed of coming back one day.”

“This is my home. It’s an incredible football club with amazing people, making it a unique environment to play and work.”

According to sources, the club initially planned to sell either Ederson or Stefan Ortega before finalizing the deal for Trafford.

However, following Newcastle’s recent actions, City felt compelled to expedite their attempt to sign Trafford.

Reports suggest that Ederson will likely stay at the Etihad, despite interest from Galatasaray, while backup goalkeeper Ortega will be making a move. This sets up a competition for the starting spot among Ederson, Trafford, and Ortega in Pep Guardiola’s squad.

Having sold Trafford for £14 million two years ago, City insiders believe they have effectively re-signed him for a cost of £13 million.

This report references information from Mark Ogden at ESPN.

Fan Take: This transfer is significant for soccer fans as it demonstrates Manchester City’s strategic approach to building their squad with young talent, reinforcing their ambitions to remain at the top of the Premier League. Trafford’s return adds depth to their goalkeeping roster, potentially increasing competition and driving performance across the squad.
