Olympic Boxing Gold Medalist Lazizbek Mullojonov Tests Positive for Doping

Razizbek Murokhonov, the Paris Olympic heavyweight boxing champion from Uzbekistan, has been provisionally suspended following a positive test for a banned substance, the International Testing Agency (ITA) announced. The 26-year-old athlete tested positive for metasterone, a synthetic anabolic androgenic steroid known for promoting rapid muscle growth and enhanced strength, based on samples collected on June 11th during unannounced doping control.

The ITA stated that Murokhonov has been informed of the findings and has the right to request testing of a B sample. If the B sample confirms the initial results, it will be considered a confirmed anti-doping rule violation. Should the B sample not be tested, the case will still proceed as a confirmed violation. The agency also emphasized that the athlete will have the chance to explain the test results.

Reuters reached out to the Uzbekistan Boxing Federation for their response. Murokhonov earned a bronze medal at the 2023 IBA World Boxing Championships in the heavyweight category and secured gold in the super heavyweight division at the 2022 Asian Amateur Boxing Championships.

Fan Take: This development is significant for fight fans as it challenges the integrity of competition at the highest level of boxing. A confirmed doping violation involving a top athlete like Murokhonov could shift attention to stricter doping controls, impacting the sport’s reputation and future competitions.
