Amorim’s Stand Against “Toxic” Culture: A Courageous Challenge

CHICAGO — Luke Shaw has expressed his support for Reuben Amorim’s efforts to transform the "toxic" culture at Manchester United, acknowledging the Portuguese coach’s decision to remove underperforming players from the squad.

Shaw noted that Amorim is committed to elevating standards at Old Trafford after what has been the club’s most challenging season in over half a century. The English defender revealed that the 40-year-old has made it clear that any player falling short of his expectations will find themselves sidelined.

"The mentality is a major focus for him," Shaw commented. "Reuben demands full commitment. He expects nothing less than 100%. If someone is giving 85 or 90%, that’s simply unacceptable."

"It’s easy to see from the outside how things were. Over the past few years, the atmosphere has been very negative and unhealthy," he added. "We need a healthy, positive environment filled with good energy and happiness."

Amorim, who took charge in November, is already making significant changes within the United squad. Marcus Rashford was sent on loan to Barcelona, while players like Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Jadon Sancho, and Tyrell Malacia were left off the US preseason tour.

The new signings, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, reportedly joined the club due to their strong desire to be part of the team. "There are no stragglers in this group anymore," Shaw stated. "You can see the impact he’s had in the past eight months."

"If players don’t adhere to his standards, that’s how it should be," Shaw continued. "His strict demands are clear: everyone must prioritize the team. The players stand fully behind him and his vision for the squad. Ultimately, the manager needs to uphold these standards because his position isn’t guaranteed."

Amorim is already under pressure following United’s disappointing 15th place finish in the Premier League and a loss to Tottenham in the Europa League final. The US tour serves as a reset for both players and staff as they prepare for the upcoming season.

As the club’s longest-serving player, Shaw has committed to helping set the tone for accountability. "We need to demand more every day, especially from the seasoned players," he stated. "We will uphold training standards and ensure no one lags behind. Whatever direction the manager wants to go in, we are fully behind him."

Fan Take: This news is significant for soccer fans as it hints at a potential revival for Manchester United, a giant in the sport struggling to reclaim its former glory. The changes implemented by Amorim could set a precedent for other clubs, emphasizing the importance of a strong team mentality and clear expectations for players.
