MONTREAL – Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek defeated China’s Guo Hanyu 6-3, 6-1 on Wednesday, making an easy progression to the third round of the National Bank Open.

Swiatek, who played for the first time since routing Amanda Anisimova 6-0 and 6-0 in the sixth final, took a 4-0 lead, pushing the game’s winning streak to 24.

“I think we played a really solid game today,” Swiatek said. “It’s always hard to play your first game on a hard court after a rather long break from the surface, so I’m happy I’ve focused on myself, adjusted to the situation and played well.”

On Friday, the second-seeded Polish star will have Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova face Germany’s Everly, the 6-3, 6-4 winner in the evening match.

Two-time US defending champion Jessica Pegra also advanced, topping Greece’s Maria Saccari 7-5 and 6-4.

The sixth seed of the United States, Madison Keys promoted Germany’s Laura Sigemund 6-2, 6-1, and former top-ranked Japanese player Naomiosaka to Russia’s Edgelude Mirasam Sonova to 4-6, 7-6 (6), 6-3.
