Steve Yzerman, Red Wings GM, Poised to Make a Game-Changing Move

The Detroit Red Wings have been busy during the 2025 offseason with various player transactions. They traded Vladimir Tarasenko, who carried a $4.75 million cap hit, to the Minnesota Wild and signed several free agents, including James Van Leemsik, Mason Appleton, and defensemen Jacob Bernard-Docker and Ian Mitchell. Restricted free agents Jonatan Berggren and Albert Johansson have also agreed to new contracts. To strengthen their goaltending, they acquired veteran goalie John Gibson from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Petr Mrazek.

Despite these moves, Red Wings fans are eager for GM Steve Yzerman to make a significant and impactful acquisition. While Yzerman has a reputation for astute management and expressed openness to big trades during the season’s press conference, opportunities for high-profile free agent signings were limited. Notable players like Mitch Marner were traded to the Vegas Golden Knights, while others such as Sam Bennett, Aaron Eckblad, and Brad Marchand re-signed with their teams before hitting free agency. Similarly, Nicolaj Ehlers and Brock Boeser committed to other clubs, and K’Andre Miller extended his tenure with the Carolina Hurricanes.

Yzerman acknowledged the difficulty in landing major free agents this year, noting that many key players were already signed or traded before free agency started. However, trading opportunities still exist ahead of training camp in mid-September. Players like Dallas Stars’ Jason Robertson, Brian Last, and Pittsburgh Penguins’ Rickard Rakell have surfaced in trade rumors. On defense, the Flames’ Rasmus Andersson and Jack Roslovic, former Hurricane teammates, are also being considered.

Yzerman remains hopeful that current roster players will improve, but he continues to explore trade options to bolster the team. The possibility for a game-changing move remains, leaving fans optimistic for impactful additions.
