Brent Burns Opens Up: The Real Reason He Chose to Keep Playing Instead of Retiring

Brent Burns, the former defenseman for the Carolina Hurricanes, is starting a new chapter at 40 years old. After three seasons with the Hurricanes, Burns has signed a one-year deal worth $1 million with the Colorado Avalanche. Retirement isn’t on his radar yet, as he remains passionate about playing hockey.

“I love it. I love coming to the rink every day and working. It’s really the best,” Burns shared following his signing with the Avalanche. “There are many reasons… But the biggest thing for me is that there’s still something to pursue. I’m still highly motivated and I have one major goal.”

Though Burns no longer focuses solely on defense as he once did when he won the Norris Trophy, he continues to adapt and understand the different roles expected of him. “The game has evolved. Every year feels a bit different,” Burns explained. “You play with different teammates, learn new things, and stay engaged both on and off the ice. That’s part of what I enjoy – trying to grasp these changes and keep improving.”

During his time with the Hurricanes, Burns played 246 games, netting 34 goals, assisting 99 times, and accumulating 133 points, with an average ice time of 21 minutes and 53 seconds.
