In a significant move for Major League Soccer, Toronto FC has secured midfielder Djordje Mihailovic from the Colorado Rapids in a landmark deal, according to various reports.

The Rapids reportedly received a record-breaking fee for this star player, totaling $8 million, with an added potential $1 million in incentives. Additionally, there are sell-on clauses that may yield further financial benefits for Colorado.

Despite rejecting several offers for Mihailovic earlier this summer, the situation shifted when he expressed his desire to move due to dissatisfaction with his current team.

The 26-year-old has been a key player for the Rapids since his arrival in 2024, when Colorado invested $3 million to sign him from Dutch club Alkmaar Zaanstreek. Over the past year and a half, his market value has significantly increased.

Having had a standout season, Mihailovic notched 11 goals and 10 assists last season, and halfway through the current season, he has tallied nine goals and six assists. Notably, he achieved three assists in a single match on July 12, leading to a 3-0 victory over Vancouver’s Whitecaps.

Starting his career with the Chicago Fire, Mihailovic later played for CF Montreal before heading to the Netherlands. He has made 11 appearances and scored once for the US men’s national team, hovering just outside regular selection. In Colorado, he established a strong presence and now aims to enhance Toronto’s offense.

Toronto FC is in dire need of reinforcements, sitting near the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings with only five wins this season and a total of 25 goals scored, making it one of the worst offensive records in MLS.

This trade, however, may spell trouble for Colorado, which is currently ninth in the Western Conference, making playoff contention a challenge. Fans are likely to question the decision to part with their leading scorer, as Brazilian forward Rafael Navaro now takes on that role with nine goals and assists this season.
