NEW YORK – Former top 10 player Paula Badosa was pulled out of the US Open on Friday after dealing with a back injury that had sidelined her since her first round defeat at Wimbledon on June 30th.

The American Tennis Association announced Badosa’s withdrawal, saying Jill Teichen will replace her on-site. Alize Cornett, who retired from tennis in 2024 but returned to action this year, is the next woman to anchor in a draw at Flushing Meadows if anyone else retreats.

Play is scheduled to begin on August 24th in singles brackets at the last Grand Slam tournament of the year.

Badosa, a 27-year-old from Spain, reached the second-highest career ranking in 2022 and is currently 12th.

She arrived in the semi-finals at the Australian Open in January. Her best show at US Open was her run to the quarterfinals last year.
