Shane Van Gisbergen Elevates His Road Course Game with Fourth NASCAR Win of 2025

Shane Van Gisbergen has noted an improvement in his road course performance, highlighted by his fourth NASCAR Cup Series victory at Watkins Glen on Sunday. The New Zealander has established himself as a road course standout since his surprising win at his Chicago debut in 2023.

Now in his first full Cup Series season, Van Gisbergen has further extended his dominance, clinching four wins on road courses in just five attempts this year. This achievement makes him the first rookie in series history to secure four victories, solidifying his status as one of the sport’s most thrilling talents in recent memory.

Van Gisbergen’s success stems from his deep experience in the Australian Supercar Championship, where he captured three titles with Triple 8 Race Engineering under GM. While seasoned NASCAR drivers continue to strive to close the gap with him, Sunday’s commanding 11-second win demonstrated that there’s still ground to make up.

When asked about his competitors’ progress, Van Gisbergen credited his own development this season as a full-time Cup driver, after a partial 2024 campaign last year. He emphasized that being fully involved with the team allowed him to refine car setups to his liking, continuously learning and improving week after week.

“We’ve gotten better in every area — from truck setups to tuning tools — and had intense meetings to enhance our performance compared to last year,” he said. “I could feel the difference in the car from morning to afternoon, and I think we’re the only team that keeps pushing forward.”

Van Gisbergen celebrated his latest victory alongside his father Robert in upstate New York, sharing that his dad had faced tough times recently, including multiple family losses. “It’s been hard supporting him from across the world, and I’ve felt extremely homesick,” Van Gisbergen admitted. “Having my sister move in has helped him, and seeing him here almost tearful shows how far we’ve come from home.”

Fan Take: Shane Van Gisbergen’s breakout rookie season on road courses is a thrilling development for NASCAR, injecting fresh talent and international flair into the sport. His success not only raises the competition bar but also broadens NASCAR’s global appeal, potentially attracting new fans and inspiring future cross-discipline racers.
