PL Referees Boss: Expansion of VAR Usage to Yellow Cards Could Be on the Horizon

Howard Webb, the chief referee of the Premier League, indicated the possibility of broadening the video assistant referee (VAR) system to incorporate yellow cards and corner decisions.

He mentioned that the International Football Association Board (IFAB) is currently evaluating the use of VAR, which has been in place in the Premier League since the 2019-20 season. Webb expressed his willingness to consider any requests from stakeholders in football for an expansion of VAR’s functions.

At present, VAR is utilized to verify key decisions, such as goals, straight red cards, penalties, and cases of mistaken identity, but its application could be extended further.

In an interview with BBC Sport, Webb remarked:

“We recognize the impact of incorrectly awarded corners and yellow cards that are easily identifiable through video replays. However, there’s also an understanding that VAR is intended to rectify clear errors in significant situations, so discussions and consultations with the English football community are important.”

Webb also addressed the mistreatment of match officials. Referee Michael Oliver received online death threats, while Anthony Taylor encountered hostile fans in Budapest after a Europa League final loss to Sevilla.

He stated, “Dissent towards decisions does not justify abuse directed at officials or threats against their safety and their families. This behavior is entirely unacceptable.”

Webb acknowledged that David Coote is unlikely to return to officiating at high levels after his dismissal last year.

Coote was let go by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) in December following a video in which he made disparaging remarks about Liverpool and manager Jurgen Klopp. He has now been suspended for eight weeks and mandated to undergo additional in-person training as mandated by the Football Association.

When asked about Coote’s potential return, Webb replied, “It’s challenging given the circumstances. We’ll reach out to him and are concerned for his well-being, but it’s going to be a tough road ahead.”

Fan Take: This development is significant for soccer fans as it could enhance the fairness and accuracy of officiating, ensuring that critical decisions are correctly made in every match. Implementing VAR for yellow cards and corners could lead to fewer controversies and improve the overall viewing experience in the sport.
