  • Defensive Concerns Loom Large
  • Ekitike Shines in Premier League Debut
  • Semeño Almost Sparks Incredible Comeback

Liverpool officially secured their Premier League title defense with a thrilling 4-2 win against Bournemouth.

Despite concerns following their Community Shield match at Wembley last weekend, Arne Slot’s team showed no signs of fatigue, bouncing back from a penalty shootout loss against Crystal Palace.

In their first Premier League game since the unfortunate passing of Diogo Jota last month, new signing Hugo Ekitike scored just 37 minutes into the match, marking an impressive debut.

Ekitike, wearing the Number Nine jersey, linked up well with Cody Gakpo, who netted Liverpool’s second goal just four minutes into the second half.

Although Liverpool appeared to be in control, Bournemouth staged a remarkable comeback as Antoine Semeño scored two goals within nine minutes, briefly silencing Anfield.

The match was interrupted in the first half due to allegations of racial abuse directed at Semeño from the crowd, leading to a moment where Bournemouth seemed determined to secure a last-minute winner.

Despite difficulties, Federico Chiesa emerged as Liverpool’s unexpected hero, while Mohamed Salah added to his tally with a signature finish in the second half, marking the start of his 2025/26 season goal count.

While Liverpool ultimately secured a dramatic win, it’s clear that improvements are still needed.

In a night filled with excitement as Liverpool claimed the Premier League crown, significant issues also emerged from Anfield.

Defensive Concerns Loom Large

After winning their 20th domestic title last season, Liverpool entered this campaign aiming for back-to-back titles for the first time in over four decades. However, despite a thrilling victory, Arne Slot is desperately seeking better defensive solidity.

Even though Bournemouth only managed to score once in their opener, they raised important questions about Liverpool’s defense, highlighting unresolved issues.

After watching their Champions League matches, Liverpool allowed two goals in each of their last two games, including a 2-1 loss to PSG last March. Furthermore, they ended the previous season with a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace, securing just one clean sheet in their last eight Premier League matches.

Ekitike Shines in Premier League Debut

While the defensive lapses were evident, fans at Anfield were thrilled with the immediate impact from their new signings.

Ekitike, who scored during last week’s Community Shield, could not have hoped for a better start in the Premier League. Though fellow signing Florian Wirtz didn’t make much of an impact, the young French talent certainly stole the limelight.

Ekitike received a standing ovation when substituted late in the match after delivering a standout performance, making a memorable debut.

As Liverpool remains in pursuit of Alexander Isaac from Newcastle, fans may start questioning whether the Swedish international is truly needed before the transfer window closes.

Semeño Almost Sparks Incredible Comeback

Despite not achieving a stunning upset, Bournemouth can take numerous positives from their impressive performance against the reigning champions.

While they struggled to secure European competition in the latter part of last season, the visitors received accolades across the Premier League following their showing on Friday.

Having won just three out of their last 15 matches in all competitions last season, the former Rayo Vallecano manager knows the importance of stability this time around.

With Semeño signing a new contract last month and scoring two goals at Anfield, Bournemouth is optimistic about their prospects this season.

The Cherries will return to action next week as they host Wolves on the south coast.
