Shaykey Preseason Kicks Off with Increased Attendance and Cheerful Titans’ Messages

ATLANTA – The Tennessee Titans’ rookie quarterback Cameron Ward faced a tough night in the second preseason game on Friday. Ward completed just two of his seven pass attempts totaling 42 yards during Tennessee’s 23-20 win against the Atlanta Falcons.

Initially, Titans coach Brian Callahan intended for Ward to play two series, but after the offense struggled early on, that plan was adjusted. “I wanted to send them back out there,” Callahan said post-game. “The play count was still low, but penalties hurt us on key downs and we couldn’t convert on third down.”

One missed opportunity was a key pass to veteran wide receiver Van Jefferson that fell incomplete, which would have positioned the Titans on Atlanta’s 30-yard line in the game’s first series. After requesting an extra series last week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Ward got that added chance on Friday. “It’s just more reps for me,” Ward said after the game. “The biggest thing I’m focusing on is not rushing myself because that makes things harder.”

The Titans rounded out a productive joint practice week with the win, despite Ward playing without top receivers Calvin Ridley and Tyler Rockett, who were rested. Ward commented positively on Ridley matching up against Falcons corner AJ Terrell Jr. during practice and said he’s eager to finish the preseason strong against the Minnesota Vikings. “It felt great competing with guys like AJ Terrell and Ridley,” Ward said. “That connection with receivers makes everything better. I’m excited to see where we can go and ready for a tough defensive challenge from Minnesota next week.”
