Maverick Viñales Confirmed Out of Austrian MotoGP Following Qualifying Setback

Maverick Vinales was withdrawn from the MotoGP event in Austria following the qualifying session at the Red Bull Ring. Although he took part in qualifying, Vinales was ruled ineligible to continue after undergoing a medical examination post-session. The Spanish rider had initially passed medical checks prior to the first practice session (FP1) and confirmed his participation for Friday’s activities.

Vinales was set to make a comeback this weekend after a shoulder injury sustained at the German Grand Prix sidelined him from both the Sachsenring race and the Czech Grand Prix before the summer break. However, a statement from Red Bull KTM Tech3 on social media revealed that despite his efforts, the pain in Vinales’ left shoulder remained severe. A subsequent medical review declared him unfit to continue at the Austrian Grand Prix. The team expressed hope for his recovery and return in the near future.

During qualifying, Vinales was among the leading riders in the first quarter, completing only one lap towards the end of the session. Following his withdrawal, he will have six days to recuperate before the Hungarian Grand Prix kicks off on Friday, August 22nd.

With Vinales out, Enea Bastianini is the sole Tech3 representative at KTM’s home race in Austria. The Italian rider was the quickest KTM competitor in qualifying, securing fifth place in the second quarter. Other KTM riders, Pedro Acosta and Brad Binder, finished in 7th and 11th positions, respectively.

Fan Take: Vinales’ absence is a significant blow for KTM and MotoGP enthusiasts alike as his return was highly anticipated. This setback highlights the physical demands of the sport and underscores the importance of rider health, potentially affecting team dynamics and race outcomes in the upcoming races.
