Bemidji State escapes with a home invitation behind Logan Schoepp’s record-breaking round

Bemidji – Before Monday, Logan Schoepp’s personal best round was a par 69 64.

Bemidji State Men’s Golf Senior took part in his final campaign with the Beavers, which was removed from a Wire-to-Wire personal victory at the NSIC tournament last spring. He took part in his final college tournament at Bemiji Town and Country Club with a tip on his shoulder.

Schoepp had a 64 card on par 71 on Monday at Bemidji State Invitational. It defeated Beaver’s program to score the best scores in individual rounds on three strokes.

He backed it up with 70 in the second round and beat the remaining field with at least six strokes.

“I was qualifying early last week and I was so close that I felt I was just going through,” Shep said. “That’s exactly what happened. I made very few mistakes. There were no bogeys.

Schoepp entered the turn with a 4-under par on Monday and was Nos. Birdie was used in No. 4 in No. 2 and 8. He finished the round with a birdie on three of his final seven holes.

On Tuesday, Schwepp was 1 under par on his turn. He made a par on the final seven holes and won the second university competition.

“If you film something like 64, it’s just different the next day,” Shep said. “It’s about keeping what you did and picking a spot to be offensive. You do that, you will help your team close it.”

BSU’s first-year head coach Ben Corvid was once a teammate with Schwepp during the 2022-23 season. They each won the Team NSIC Tournament Championship.

Now Corbid is at the helm, and Schoepp is leading the way in the link.

“That’s a mild confidence for him,” Corvid said. “He’s not a flashy guy. He doesn’t go out there and he doesn’t get rough on the course. He’s a guy who remains stable and trusts the game.

“It’s painted 64 on a par 71, usually 72, and it wipes out the single-round program record with three strokes, but that’s not what I saw coming, but I’m glad he did.”

Without Shep, the pair of Beaver would have been in a three-way tie for a victory at Concordiacent. Tracking a pole with 2 under par.

Tegan Laplante was shot in the 70s in a row on Monday and Tuesday, shooting seven birdies and 36 holes eagle.

“Tegan was stable,” Corvid said. “The hits he had on the ball were incredible. He drove the ball very well. He hit the irons very well. His wedge was great. He says that too. He left some with the putter.

Freshman Julius Allenkiel also shot a 140. He had one par on Monday, but went to 3 under par on Tuesday. Arenkiel made seven birdies with BTCC in the second round.

“He loves it,” Corvid said. “This is the first time I’ve seen him in full competitive mode. He loves to compete. I get a smile on his face when I say hello to him on a par 3.

As a team, Bemidji State finished with a 9 under par. This was 20 strokes than the Concordia-St. It’s better than Paul, Minnesota and 25 strokes than Augustana.

“It’s good to prove some people wrong,” Schoepp said. “There was a good field with CSP, Mankato, (Augustana). When the team you’re playing is good and you come out with a big win, it makes a difference.”

Corbid’s B team finished fifth with a 22 over par. Karen Ryan finished pars evenly in both rounds, placing them in the fifth individually.

“They’re pushing each other hard right now,” Corvid said. “They’re gunning at each other. I want to beat my teammates, but you want to beat them too. The internal competition makes you stronger. I could see you in the top five.

With Ekren Miller to Corbid shift coach, the BSU depth luxuries are still abundant.

“We’re basically going to spend nine tournaments and find five guys trying to get it done,” Corbid said. “If a man goes bad, I’ll have someone to come to pick up someone who’s going to get a guy right behind him.”

For Corbid, Bemidji State head coach was easy, so he was waiting for his first victory. He took over to Miller in August and spent two years as an assistant.

“This is an unprecedented situation,” Corvid said. “I’m excited, but I didn’t surprise us that we were there, these guys are ready to play and seeing victory from the gate.

The Bemidji state women’s golf team came in ninth place after Monday’s opening round. The Beavers jumped to seventh place on the second day behind Sarah Sloga’s outstanding performance.

After 93 rounds of 22 cards on Monday, Sroga finished the tournament with 85 rounds. It’s enough to finish in 24th place with a 34-over par.

Abigail Tarkovsky finished 26th, only two strokes behind Sloga. Lauren and Haley Kunman shot 181 and 182 respectively. Bailey Tilly (206, 49), Isabella DePue (199, 46) and Nacomis Mitchell (221, 51) concluded the Beaver day.

Concordia-St. Paul won the tournament with a 90-over par. This was four strokes than Minnesota Crookston and five shots than U-Mary.
