The Europeans hope to see their experience make a difference by taking part in the 2025 Ryder Cup, and they proved right as visitors took a three-point lead in the US on Friday. It was the first time Europe has led the US soil since 2004 to the first day of Friday’s action (when visitors scored 18.5 to 9.5), with Captain Luke Donald pressing almost all the right buttons in the first two sessions. Meanwhile, Americans have been wondering if they should go to Plan B in the face of a margin that will not return since 1999.
The team’s top stars performed was the name of the game on the first day. John Ram and Rory McIlroy went 3-0-1 in Europe, providing the stability and leadership the team needs from the best players. Meanwhile, US Captain Keegan Bradley saw Scotty Schaeffler and Bryson Deccanbeau combine to go 0-4-0. Will it make the problem worse? Some of the pairings he expected to turn to this week are now a big question mark.
During the foursome session on Saturday morning, Bradley chose to stick to three of the same four pairings, changing Cameron Young to play with Bryson Deccanbeau instead of Justin Thomas. The pairing was to score the only point in the US Foursome Session as Europe again won 3-1, earning a 8.5-3.5 lead.
The disaster finally forced Bradley to make some changes, but now it appears too late. His biggest move was with Scotty Schaeffler and Bryson Deccanbeau, who both achieved success together in 2021. Bradley hopes that his top two players will make him a much needed point when trailing in the afternoons until 5pm. Europe is reviving three of the four pairings from Friday, as Luke Donald wants to knock Americans on the door before Sunday’s single. One change is Tyrrell Hatton (in the case of Viktor Hovland) and Matt Fitzpatrick, who went out in place of Ludvig Aberg and Rasmus Højgaard after falling to the team by the Americans on Friday afternoon.
The team that dominated these two was Young and Thomas pairing to guide things for the United States against McIlroy and Raleigh in the Titanic showdown. You can then see Schaeffler Decambaugh pairing with Fleetwood and Rose. The US will look to the best players and give them the early points to provide a faint hope.
JJ Spaun will now get another turn in the afternoon with Xander Schaufele as Bradley placed Ben Griffin on the bench on Saturday. Burns and Cantlay will pair again after halving the game on Friday. ADN will now try to post all the points on the board.
