Glaserman, Corey and Campbell share lead in Bay Current Classic

YOKOHAMA, Japan — Americans Max Glaserman, Bud Corey and Brian Campbell each shot 4-under 67 to top the leaderboard Thursday after the first round of the Bay Current Classic in Japan.

This is the only PGA Tour tournament held in Japan, and since 2019 it has been held east of Tokyo as the ZOZO Championship, but this year it moved to Yokohama Country Club.

Eight players, including Australia’s Adam Scott, were within one stroke of the lead. Another seven strokes left him with a two stroke lead.

Two players on the losing Ryder Cup U.S. team, Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa, each finished with even-par 71s. Defending champion Nico Echavarria (Colombia) shot a 70.

Hideki Matsuyama of Japan, the 2021 Masters champion, shot a 72 in the first round.

Glaserman was second a year ago, one stroke behind, and lost on the 72nd hole despite Echavarria’s birdie.

“I love playing in Japan,” Glaserman said. “It’s a great culture, respectful people, respectful fans.”

Glaserman described the first round as “very difficult” due to strong winds. He also tipped his hat to Echavarria, who is hoping to perform again.

“Nico got it done that week,” he said. “So we might be able to finish it this week.”
