If you are looking to purchase a new set of clubs, you will have to make many decisions. First things first: what kind of player are you? Are you a high handicap player looking for a club with maximum forgiveness, or are you a single digit player looking for great feel and feedback? Are you a brand enthusiast or do you like to try out numerous models to find the one that’s right for you?
And even if you know exactly what brand you plan on putting in your bag, there are other important customization decisions to make. Graphite shaft or steel shaft? How much flex is it? The list goes on!
As you browse through the available options, you may find other descriptors that you may not be familiar with, namely AEE-cast irons and forged irons. What do these terms mean? And how can you decide which one is best for your game? I asked Mark Roybal of Truespec for his opinion.
“The difference between cast iron and forged iron is the manufacturing process,” he said. “Forged golf clubs are made from a single billet of metal that is hammered or stamped into shape. Cast clubs are made by pouring liquid metal into a mold.”
What does this mean from a performance perspective?
“There’s no particular player who will benefit from either,” Roybal said. “Historically, forged golf clubs were primarily for elite players. With improvements in manufacturing processes, there are now many forged golf clubs that suit high handicap players.”
So when it comes to choosing a club for your game, which is the best choice: cast or forged?
“There is no right or wrong answer to this question,” Roybal said. “There are many cast and forged irons and wedges that are suitable for players of all levels. Forged golf clubs generally offer a softer feel, but may feel stiffer when cast.”
With that in mind, the best way to decide is to test a few different models and see which one you prefer. Check out some popular cast iron and forged iron options below.
