Rory McIlroy wants the 2025 Ryder Cup to be remembered more for what happened on the track, rather than what happened off it.

It was only the seventh time in the event’s history that Europe made history by winning an away Ryder Cup, but instead much of the focus was on: About verbal violence McIlroy and other Europeans received it from some fans.

“Like everyone else, I’ve been following the stories that come out of the Ryder Cup,” he said this week. “Unfortunately, I think that takes away from what we need to focus on, which was a great performance by the European team.”

McIlroy said he didn’t realize in the moment how good Europe had performed, especially during the first two days of the Ryder Cup, when they had built a commanding seven-point lead going into the final day of the tournament. He said watching the highlights from the past two weeks gave him a new appreciation for what he and his teammates were able to accomplish.

“The Americans are going to hit close, and we’re going to hit even closer,” he said. “The Americans holed the putt, we holed the putt over them, and it happened every time.”

Europe was on the verge of a crushing defeat and had to endure a ferocious comeback attempt by the United States on the final day of competition. Just as Europe did well in the first two days, the United States did just as well in Sunday’s singles matches.

In fact, the Americans looked like they were on the verge of a historic comeback until Shane Lowry made two great shots, including a birdie putt on the 18th, to give Europe the win.

Europe’s dominance over the first two days and America’s comeback attempt on Sunday are just two of the major Ryder Cup storylines you won’t soon forget. There was also a controversial dynamic between the two captains, Luke Donald and Keegan Bradley. “Envelope Rule” And the largely forgotten singles match between McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler was the first match in Ryder Cup history between the No. 1 and No. 2 players in the world.

Unruly behavior by some fans led to the resignation of PGA of America president Dan Rea Jr. apologize in public Immediately after the end of the Ryder Cup. McIlroy and other players have also spoken out about their less-than-ideal experiences.

Simply put, you can’t talk about the 2025 Ryder Cup without mentioning a hostile environment that, for better or worse, has only added to the drama that unfolded over three days at New York’s Bethpage Black. McIlroy certainly understands that, but he clearly prefers to let that story take a backseat to the rest of what happened during those three memorable days of golf.

“Unfortunately, people don’t seem to remember that, they seem to remember that week for the wrong reasons,” he said. “I want to switch gears a little bit and focus on how good the European team was and how proud I was to be a part of that team and win the Ryder Cup away.”
