Fabio Paratici and Johan Lange explain their completely different managerial roles at Tottenham

Tottenham announced a new leadership structure earlier this week, with Fabio Paratici and Johan Lange both working as co-sporting directors, giving clarity on how they will work together in the N17.

Many had speculated that Paratici’s return would mark the end of Lange’s involvement in Spurs’ recruitment strategy, but as the club have confirmed he will be working alongside the popular Italian.

Mr Paratici returned full-time after working as a consultant for several months, advising Mr Lange, CEO Vinay Venkatesham, Thomas Frank and former chairman Daniel Levy, but his formal return to north London comes two years after he was forced to resign due to the global ban.

“I’m happy to be back at the club I love,” Paratici said via the club’s official website.

“I have been working with Johan, Vinay and Thomas as a consultant over the last few months and am looking forward to returning to London and joining the team full-time. I am confident that working together with Johan we can build a special future for the club and our supporters.”

The 53-year-old has played a key role in signing Tottenham’s key stars including Cristian Romero, Dejan Kulusevski, Pedro Polo, Rodrigo Bentancur, Jed Spence, Destiny Udoghi and Papu Sarr, and his return is expected to be a big boost for the Lilywhites.

He is a key ally of Levy, who left last month after 25 years at the club, threatening to derail Paratici’s move (talkSPORT).

However, Venkatesham ultimately decided that Paratthi should be involved in a formal capacity, regardless of Levy’s departure, and given the transfer executive’s track record, extensive contact list and reputation as a fierce negotiator, there is no debate.

Explaining the completely different roles of Paratici and Lange as Tottenham managers

Although Paratici and Lange’s title is “co-sporting director”, as Sky Sports’ Michael Bridge explained, they will actually have completely different duties.

Paratici is thought to be the “dealer” overseeing the task of acquiring star players, while Lange’s responsibilities are focused on scouting and talent identification.

“It’s the same position, but it’s also two different roles,” Bridge explained.

“As for Paratici, he will be looking to bring in senior players.

“He’s an influential figure and will be a key figure in getting the deal done. That’s what I’m thinking here with Paratici. As for Lange, he’ll have a focus on the academy, an eye for talent, scouting… Lukas Bergvall, one of the real successes.”

“He will look at performance data and analysis…The message is ‘unity’. It’s a collective, led by Venkatesham and the sporting director and head coach Thomas Frank. That’s the message from Tottenham Hotspur.”

Paratici’s reputation as a transfer expert precedes him.

Having previously honed his skills at Juventus and Tottenham, he is known for his astute negotiation tactics, ability to close high-profile deals and strategic approach to the market. Paratici excels at identifying the right time to attack, while leveraging his relationships with clubs and agents to secure major contracts.

Lange, by contrast, brings a keen eye for talent and a deep understanding of player development.

His background as Technical Director at FC Copenhagen and Sporting Director at Aston Villa highlights his experience in scouting and building sustainable recruitment strategies.

Lange’s focus on a long-term talent pipeline, young talent integration, and data-driven scouting will support Paratici’s ability to close deals, and the two will complement each other well and share key responsibilities.

This is a great move for Spurs and other teams in the Premier League could be inspired if Spurs’ dynamic is successful.
