BASEL, Switzerland — Joao Fonseca’s family arrived just in time to watch the Brazilian teenager win the biggest title of his career at the Swiss Indoor Stadium on Sunday.
Fonseca defeated Spain’s Alejandro Davidovic Fokina 6-3, 6-4 in the final and will move to a career-high No. 28 in the world rankings on Monday.
“My parents just came from Brazil. They were going to go to Paris (for the Paris Masters), but they changed their flight and arrived with my uncles an hour before the game,” said Fonseca, 19.
“It’s incredible that they came here to win the most important title of my career.”
This was his first title at the ATP500 level.
