ASU freshman golfer emails professor before tournament, receives great response

The Arizona State University men’s golf team is one of four teams competing in this week’s Eastlake Cup in Atlanta, one of the premier college events on the calendar. Based on the latest GolfWeek/Bushnell rankings, the lineup includes No. 2 Virginia, No. 4 Ole Miss, No. 7 ASU and No. 14 Florida.

But it led to a hilarious exchange between an ASU freshman and one of his professors at a tournament in September. Boston Bracken, a native of St. George, Utah, was looking forward to competing in the Wohari Classic, held at Wohari Golf Club in Coalville, Utah, outside Salt Lake City.

Bracken was doing the right thing and contacted her before she missed class. Then the professor gave an answer that had never been seen before.

“Is there anything I should be aware of?” the professor wrote, his name included in a screenshot of the exchange. “Are you kidding me? I’ll do Coach Thurmond’s job for you,” the professor said jokingly.

The professor went on to explain in detail about the golf course, its design and strategy.

It’s hard to be sure if the advice worked, but Bracken shot even par through 54 holes and tied for 14th place. He was the Sun Devils’ third-best golfer in the tournament behind medalist Connor Williams and Michael Myasses (tied for eighth). ASU also tied New Mexico for the team title.
